Thursday was a special day for Lockheed Martin workers to commute to work. The company celebrated workers who take their passion, from work, home with them.

It’s not unusual to see airplanes at the Lockheed Martin plant, but the ones in the air Thursday morning weren’t the normal high-tech, world-class jets that the company builds.

These were private planes; belonging to employees who’ve let their passion take ‘flight’. One employee said, “A lot of us here at Lockheed have the hobby of building airplanes.”

Once a year, Lockheed celebrates with ‘Bring Your Wings to Work Day’.

Of the more than 14,000 employees at the company there are 60 who fly. On this day they are encouraged to commute, by air.

“We do this primarily as part of diversity,” explained employee Kurt Rutowski. “The company sponsors this so the employees can showcase some of their talents and hobbies and invite all the other employees to come out and view it.”

The employee, with the airplane building hobby, said ‘Bring Your Wings to Work Day’ offers the amateur pilots an amazing opportunity. “A lot of us fly in and out of grass strips and small airports. So getting the ability to fly onto a military base and fly onto 12,000-foot runway is kind of fun!”

Having the ability to fly to work is something employee Kirby Boyd looked forward to. “I’ve always wanted to do it,” he said. “We don’t get to fly in daily. It’s a very special occasion. I get to be with some of the other pilots I work with. We love it!”

While the weather on Thursday limited the number of pilots who could fly in, it did not dampen the basic passion of employees – they admire all things that fly, no matter how high, or low, tech.
